Yixing Zhang

Yixing Zhang lives in London. Their main creative medium is photography, combined with graffiti painting, lifestyle materials, typography, photography is like the process of heating oil in a stir-fry for their art.

Yixing ‘s ongoing work Smell Me articulates the consciousness, shame, obsession, and contradiction of Chinese tomboys, butches, and queers under gender-based violence and post-colonialism, allowing an undefinable feeling to emerge. Their projects question the idealized image and the collective gaze and how societal norms define gender identity and sustain a binary consciousness. They always adopts a non-binary consciousness that dissolves the rigidity of certain patterns and allows our experiences to help us evolve.
